Sometimes a panel is too damaged to repair and has to be replaced. When that happens, there’s a choice to make: a genuine (OEM) part, an aftermarket part, or a recycled one from a wrecker. They’re not all equal — here’s how they differ in fit, cost and longevity, so you can make the call with confidence.
What the terms actually mean
- OEM / genuine. Original Equipment Manufacturer — the same part the factory fits, made to the manufacturer’s exact specification.
- Aftermarket. Made by a third-party company to fit your vehicle. Quality ranges from excellent to average depending on the brand.
- Recycled / used. A genuine part salvaged from another vehicle. Good value when it’s the right colour-year and in sound condition.
OEM vs aftermarket at a glance
| OEM / genuine | Aftermarket | |
|---|---|---|
| Fit & finish | Factory-exact | Good to variable |
| Cost | Higher | Lower |
| Availability | May need ordering | Often quicker |
| Resale confidence | Strongest | Fine on older cars |
Which should you choose?
There’s no single right answer — it depends on the car and the situation:
- Newer, leased or high-value cars. OEM is usually worth it — the fit is exact and it protects resale and any manufacturer requirements.
- Older or higher-kilometre cars. A quality aftermarket or tidy recycled panel can be a sensible, cost-effective choice that gets a great result for less.
- Safety-critical structure. Here we always prioritise the correct, properly-fitting part so the repair restores the car’s designed strength.
How it affects an insurance claim
If it’s an insurance job, your policy may specify which parts are used — some insurers prefer aftermarket or used parts to control cost. You’re entitled to ask what’s being fitted, and in New Zealand you can choose your own repairer. We manage insurance claims end-to-end and will always tell you what the options mean for your repair.
Our approach: repair first
Before we talk replacement at all, we repair wherever it’s safe and cost-effective — that keeps your cost down without compromising the result. When a panel genuinely needs replacing, we give you honest advice on the parts options and what each means for the price, then finish the job with computerised colour matching and quality workmanship you can trust.
