A scratch down the side of your car is annoying — but it doesn’t always mean an expensive repaint. What it costs to fix comes down to one thing: how deep the scratch goes. Here’s a realistic 2026 guide to scratch and scuff repair prices in New Zealand, and how to tell which type you’re dealing with.

The short version: a light clear-coat scuff can often be machine-polished out for $100–$300; a scratch into the colour usually needs a panel refinish at $400–$1,200; and a scuffed bumper typically runs $500–$2,000.

Scratch & scuff repair costs

DamageTypical cost
Clear-coat scuff (buff & polish)$100 – $300
Light scratch — touch-up & blend$150 – $500
Deep scratch — single panel repaint$400 – $1,200
Bumper scuff / scratch$500 – $2,000
Key scratch across several panels$1,500+

The three depths of a scratch

Run a fingernail gently across the scratch — if it doesn’t catch, it’s probably shallow. In order of cost:

  • Clear coat only. The top protective layer is marked but the colour underneath is intact. These often polish out — the cheapest fix.
  • Into the colour. You can see a colour change in the scratch. This needs the panel prepped, repainted and blended so the repair disappears into the original finish.
  • Down to primer or metal. The scratch is white (primer) or bare metal. This needs proper refinishing — and if it’s left, bare metal can start to rust, so it’s worth sorting sooner rather than later.

Why a scratch pen rarely does the job

DIY touch-up pens are fine for tiny stone chips, but on a visible scratch they almost always stand out — the colour never quite matches and there’s no blending. Modern paint is a precise formula, and even the right code can weather differently over years in the sun. We use computerised colour matching and blend into the surrounding panels so the repair is invisible, not just hidden.

Scuffed bumpers: repair, don’t replace

Bumpers take the most scuffs, and the good news is they rarely need replacing. We repair, fill and refinish plastic bumpers and colour-match them back to the car — usually for a fraction of the cost of a new painted part. See our bumper & plastic repair service for more.

Is it worth claiming on insurance?

For most scratches the repair cost is close to or below a typical excess (often $400–$500 in NZ), so it’s usually cheaper to pay directly and keep your no-claims history intact. For bigger damage across multiple panels, a claim can make sense — our guide to panel beating costs helps you weigh it up.
