After a prang, your insurer might point you straight to “their” repairer. What many Kiwi drivers don’t realise is that in New Zealand the choice of repairer is legally yours — not the insurance company’s. Here’s how car insurance repairs, excess and non-fault claims actually work, so you can make the call with confidence.
Can I really choose my own panel beater?
Yes. While insurers keep networks of “approved” or “preferred” repairers, your right to choose who repairs your vehicle will always be upheld. Approved-repairer networks exist for the insurer’s convenience and cost control — they don’t override your choice.
How does the excess work?
Your excess is the amount you contribute toward a claim. In New Zealand a standard excess is commonly $400–$500, though it can be higher for young or newly-licensed drivers. Usually you pay the excess to get repairs underway.
If the repair cost is close to your excess, it’s often smarter to pay directly and protect your no-claims discount — see our Hamilton price guide to weigh it up.
What if the accident wasn’t my fault?
If another driver is at fault and you can prove it, your insurer will typically refund or waive your excess once they recover their costs from the other party. To make this smooth:
- Get the other driver’s full name, contact details, plate number and insurer.
- Photograph both vehicles, the scene and any damage.
- Note the date, time and location, and grab witness details if you can.
The more complete your information, the faster your excess comes back.
Should I call the panel beater or the insurer first?
Either works, but calling a trusted repairer first has real advantages. A good shop will:
- Assess the damage and give you an honest indication of cost.
- Tell you whether a claim is even worth it versus paying directly.
- Handle the insurer paperwork and assessment on your behalf.
Choosing a repairer you can trust
Because your insurer won’t guarantee a repairer you choose yourself, look for:
- A written workmanship guarantee on the repair.
- Experience with your insurer (we’re approved repairers for IAG, Vero, AMI, State, Tower and MAS).
- Modern colour-matching and the ability to restore a factory finish.
- Genuine local reviews.
