You’ve got a dent — but do you need a full panel repair, or will paintless dent removal do the job for a fraction of the price? Choosing the right method saves you time and money. Here’s how to tell which one your car actually needs.
What is paintless dent removal (PDR)?
Paintless dent removal is exactly what it sounds like: technicians massage the dent out from behind the panel using specialist tools, without any filling or repainting. Because your factory paint stays untouched, PDR is faster, cheaper and keeps your original finish — which is great for resale value.
PDR works best when:
- The paint is unbroken — no cracks, chips or scratches.
- The dent is shallow and the metal isn’t stretched or creased.
- It’s the classic stuff: car-park door dings, minor hail damage, shopping-trolley knocks.
- There’s access to the back of the panel.
When you need traditional panel beating
Once the damage goes beyond a clean dent, PDR isn’t enough and traditional panel beating takes over. This is the full process: reshaping or replacing the panel, filling, priming and respraying with a colour-matched finish.
Choose panel beating when:
- The paint is cracked, scratched or chipped.
- The metal is creased, stretched or torn.
- The dent is on a panel edge, body line or hard-to-reach area.
- There’s underlying structural or bumper damage from a collision.
Quick comparison
| Paintless Dent Removal | Panel Beating | |
|---|---|---|
| Paint damage? | None | Cracked / scratched |
| Repaint needed? | No | Yes |
| Turnaround | Often same day | A few days |
| Keeps factory paint? | Yes | Repainted area |
| Typical cost | Lower | Higher |
Not sure which you need?
That’s completely normal — from the outside it isn’t always obvious whether the paint or metal is compromised. The safest move is a quick assessment. We’ll look at the panel, tell you honestly whether PDR will work, and only recommend panel beating if it’s genuinely needed.
